Brutus Monroe Blog Hop - May - Anything Goes
Hello crafty friends! Thanks for stopping by my blog. It's Wednesday, which is hop day for the Brutus Monroe Inspiration Team. This was an "anything goes" week, so we were free to do whatever we wanted! My project, to be honest, started out as a total hot mess! I used the branches from this month's inspiration box titled "Feathered Friends". The stamp set is really cute! It actually has a bird and birdcage theme, but I wanted to keep it simple and make a card with the branches.
So I started by stamping the branches around the edge of an aqua pigment paper panel (say that five times fast!) with Raven detail ink. I have been watercoloring a lot lately, but I typically heat emboss the image, which will contain the paint a lot, so this was where I went a little bit wrong. I mean, there's nothing WRONG with painted a stamped image, but since I'm used to the heat embossed images, the first leaves I painted flowed right outside the lines because I used a lot of water! I used color burst powders for the pigment, by putting a little bit of each powder in a palette and wetting it slightly. I used the colors Zest, Cabbage and Cornflower for this project. I loosely watercolored with Zest and Cabbage all over the whole page since a bunch of my leaves bled all around anyway, and then when it dried, I went back in with the Zest and Cabbage again, with less water, and darkened my leaves, staying within the lines much better. I still wasn't liking the look, so I kept layering the colors and adding the blue until I was satisfied. It actually took quite a while to get it to where I was happy with it! I let it dry overnight at one point and came back to it with fresh eyes the next day. I was determined not to give up on it since I had already put so much time into it! I added some splatters of color and finally I was mostly satisfied.
For the sentiment, I painted the 3 colors onto a scrap piece of aqua pigment paper, and dried it with a Then I masked off the painted section with purple tape, and used a paintbrush to paint the bottom with DecoFoil transfer gel. When that was dry, I die cut the word "hello", making sure that the word was positioned over all the colors and the transfer gel. Y'all, RUN don't walk to the website, because the word dies are on sale SUPER CHEAP! This word die is 4.50 right now!
I put the die cut word through the laminator with gold foil, and the when you peel it off, it looks like the word has been dipped in gold! I die cut the word 4 more times from Raven cardstock, so that I could glue them all together and top them with the colored/foiled word and it would have nice thick dimension on the card front. I put a vellum strip around the card front and glued the die cut word to it, and backed the whole card front on a slightly larger Raven cardstock panel.
Have you tried watercoloring with any of the Brutus Monroe mediums? They have a wide variety! Share your projects on social media, and be sure to use the hashtags #BrutusMonroe and #CreateYourOwnEnding so we can see what you make! Next hop over to Berina's blog to take a look at her gorgeous project.

This is absolutely GORGEOUS!!!
ReplyDeleteThank you so much Dawn!!
DeleteWow, this is gorgeous! I've had the Colorburst powders on my desk for a while and just used them for the first time the other day. They are so much fun to play with! Lol, I didn't think about painting with them though. I'll have to give this a try!
ReplyDeleteThanks Amanda! I have had mine for ages and I hardly ever used them. The usual way where people sprinkle them and spritz them is super cool, but not really my style, but I've been watching the videos from The Ton stamps where Effie colors her background stamps with them, and it occurred to me that I had the BM ones! I copied the way she makes her palette with a watercolor tin, and now I'm hooked! Definitely check out her videos!
